Countrywide May Foreclose Home of Johnny Carson Sidekick
Ed McMahon, who spent decades introducing talk show host Johnny Carson with his trademark "Heeeeeeere's Johnny," has become the latest celebrity to face foreclosure in recent months after falling $644,000 in arrears on a $4.8 million mortgage he obtained through Countrywide Financial Corp.
The 85-year-old television personality served for 30 years as the sidekick to the legendary late night host, in addition to performing for years as a host of the popular host of the TV talent show, “Star Search” – which, in its fashion, was a precursor to American Idol.
After retiring from full-time broadcast shows, McMahon continued to remain a presence on television as a frequent host of various infomercials.
Like many Americans, though, the former multi-millionaire has fallen on relatively hard times recently.
About 18 months ago, McMahon broke his neck and has been unable to perform ever since.
On February 28, a division of Countrywide filed a notice of default related to the mortgage on his six-bedroom, five-bathroom home in an exclusive area of Beverly Hills, according to public records.
McMahon has been trying to sell off the home for more than two years.
Initially listed for sale at $6.25 million, but later lowered to $5.75 million, the mansion is part of a gated community on a hilltop overlooking Mulholland Drive.
McMahon’s real estate broker, Alex Davis, reportedly said the home is located near to the house of controversial pop star Britney Spears, and the large number of paparazzi that frequent the neighborhood make it a difficult sell.
According to McMahon’s spokesman Howard Bragman, the former late night sidekick has been having "very fruitful discussions" with ReconTrust, a division of Countrywide, about a potential loan workout.
McMahon and his wife Pamela "understand that they are in the same situation as hundreds of thousands of other hard-working Americans, and their hearts go out to them," said the spokesman.
In April, California reported the highest number of foreclosure filings in the nation for the 16th straight month with 64,683 total foreclosure filings, according to RealtyTrac.
