Seven Ways to Get More Out of Your Day... and Life
By David Bartels

All the "pessimists" in my life, say they are not "negative"; they are just being "realistic" when they forecast negative outcomes of ideas and situations before it even happens.

Because people tend to experience what they expect, these "realists" tend to avoid trying new things and when they do, they see the negative (versus the positive) and use their narrow perspective to justify and in most cases achieve the failed result they expected in the 1st place.

People that wake up in the morning tired and saying to themselves that they are going to have a "long" day are very likely to have a longer and less productive day than someone who wakes up tired and decides they are going to have a "good" and productive day.

Henry Ford said, (one of my favorite quotes of all time), "It doesn't matter if you think you can or think you can't, you are probably right".

There is overwhelming evidence that people with a positive attitude, have more energy, are more productive, have more fun and are the people that others want to work with and be around! There are very specific things you can do every day to improve your attitude so you can get more out of your day... and your life.

Here are seven specific things you can do at any time (including right now) to amp up your energy and attitude - without caffeine or calories!

Amp Your Attitude!

  • Take action first. Dale Carnegie taught, "Act enthusiastic, and we'll be enthusiastic." He was right. Actions impact thoughts. Don't believe me? Ever gotten up and drug yourself around the house trying to get your day started? How much energy do you feel on those mornings? Compare that to the mornings when you hop out of bed because you are late. In which case do you have more energy in the moment?
  • Assume you can. How many new ideas (or even old ideas) are immediately met with "that won't work," or "we can't do that"? Maybe you can't, and maybe it won't. But what if you started with the assumption that you could do it and that it would work? I'm not saying every idea is great or that you can do everything. But it does mean that ideas can be investigated from a perspective of can-do and hope. This approach will definitely create a better attitude - and better results.
  • Have some fun. Take time out of your day and have some fun! I'm not suggesting forgetting or neglecting your work - but approaching your day with the spice of fun. What happens to your attitude when you are laughing? (My point exactly.)
  • Look for the good. Look for the good in the day, in the situation, in other people. Look for the good in ideas, challenges and problems. Just look for the good - all around you. Once you choose to look for it - you will find it (just like you will find the bad if you look for it). And, your attitude will improve, guaranteed.
  • Take off your black hat. In many situations I hear, "but someone needs to be the devil's advocate" or "I'm just being realistic". In my experience the same people are always the "devil's advocate" or being "realistic". If you always wear the black hat, take it off for a while. If you work with the black hat, ask for a black hat moratorium in your office for an hour, a day or a week. Even if you work by yourself, you will amp your attitude by being an "angel's advocate" (be "optimistic" about the end result) today.
  • Change your environment. Maybe you can't change the paint in your surroundings, but you can change your environment. If you find yourself heading to the 'dark side', get up from your desk. Walk around the office or outside. Do anything to change your perspective and you will improve your attitude - the brief bit of exercise won't hurt either.
  • Smile. I've saved the simplest and easiest for last. Smile. When you smile you feel better. When you smile - and others see it - they smile too (try it) and then you feel even better. If you want to amp your attitude right now, smile (it takes less than a second).

You can do any (or all) of these things right now. They are each a choice. Some may be easier for you, so it might be smart to start there. Start there, but don't stop there - implement these ideas and make your attitude (and results) soar!

Many years ago I took a Dale Carnegie course on public speaking and human relations.  It was well worth the time spent.

There is no need to waste time with point less worrying about things you can do nothing about.  Instead it is much better to take action and choose what you want in life.

Thanks Dave, very insightful ! As we grow in wisdom and knowledege many of our greatest character role models have come from the early 20th century. Some may argue that as a nation we a degressing from a moral and ethical stand point as evidenced by our current generations need/desire for instant gradification. It is a real blessing to have found this site and to be a memeber that I can be energized and stay the course until success knocks on my door ! Dale.

I too believe all things are possible thru Christ. All of Henry's engineers told him it was impossible to build a V8 motor. He told them to build it anyways. After much thought his MasterMind group of engineers figured it out. The impossible became possible.

Henry's quote is one of my favorites too. I am a strong believer in all that you have shared as I am always striving to help others see the power from within to make their life what they want it to be and more than they even knew they wanted. Thank you for the impact you may make for all those who read this entry.

Health, Wealth and Happiness to you each and every day.

This is a great post!

I love your pointers on "amping" your attitude.. I know the people that you describe all to well sometimes they seem to be all around you (i.e. work) If I had an office I'd get up and leave... but definately communicating that your not going to participate in their "negative attitude" gets your point accross to them real quick. They learn who you are and what your about. : )

Daniel

Thanks for the post.

I believe one can do all things through christ!  We have to sometimes remind ourselves of this.  Life can sometimes throw you some hard balls and we have to be ready to take action!  Experience is the best teacher for most, and i have learned to take one day at a time and to live life to it's fullest and most importantly take the negative and turn it around for something positive!

It all rolls around the law of attraction, though sometimes, due to problems or other factor, one wanders into the negative side.
