Read below ONLY if you are interested in why we celebrate CHRISTmas -Jesus' birthday when we do!
Food for thought:
I have always found it interesting that we celebrate Jesus' birthday Dec 25 even though He was probably born in April or at least in springtime.
It makes sense though that the early Christians celebrated His birthday when they did, Dec 24, 25. Every other religion of the day celebrated the birth of their gods about the same time. Most of them were solar gods or gods of sun to the layperson. The date signifies the winter solstice and the lengthening of the days and therefore the sun-the birth of their sun god! Makes sense doesn't it! Ahh! I can see light bulbs going off!
Early Jesus followers provided an alternative celebration to the ones already going on during this same timeframe. The purpose of their's was to witness to as many people as possible. I believe it worked back in the day, but I have my opinions as to why it has failed in modern times. It sure seems to me that today's Jesus followers have fallen into a more pagan way of celebrating. The season has become more about money, gifts, & me than Jesus. Yes, I have to include myself in this grouping. I am no different than anyone else or you for that matter.
However, now that we understand a little better hopefully you and I can act more thoughtfully and accordingly in the future and give more meaning to why and when we celebrate the birth of our Savior, Jesus. If you want to read more on this there are many website articles that go in depth about every holiday world-wide that is celebrated on Dec 24, 25 (there are many!) but I find this website article extra special b/c it explains Jesus' birth better-in my opinion v. all other religions.

Again, I am sure that you can find better sites or articles too. Our preacher talked about it at a service around Christmas time last year as well. That is what got me interested in the subject. http://cccev.com/ You can listen to our recent messages there if you wish as well!
