1) Request a free copy of your credit report at www.annualcreditreport.com. Don’t go to freecreditreport.com, they charge for it.

2) Anything negative on your report that you feel shouldn’t be on it; dispute it!

3) When disputing something on your report: Always contact the credit agencies by Certified Mail with Return Receipt!

4) Letter must include the following:

I) Complete Name(s)

II) All addresses for past 5 years

III) Date of birth

IV) Social Security Number

V) Account names and account numbers for all items being disputed

VI) A brief description of why you’re disputing the item

VII) Current date and your signature

VIII) Photocopy of your drivers license or Birth Certificate

IX) A utility bill with your name and current address

X) Photocopy of any relevant documents

5) The best time to request the credit report is in October or November, so you can gather all the necessary info together to write your letters disputing items on your report before December. Why before December? Because once the Credit Agencies receive your written dispute, there is only 30 days for; them to contact the companies with items your disputing, then the company to write back to the agency that the item should be on your report. If this is not done within 30 days, the item is expunged from your report. Why send the letters of dispute in December? No one works in an office in December! The first two weeks are all office parties, holiday planning, and gift shopping. The last two weeks are formal and/or informal vacations, and more holiday festivities. It takes someone really on the ball to; receive the dispute from the credit agency, review it, and send back verification to the credit agency that it is a legitimate dispute all within 30 days at that time of year.

6) Addresses of where to mail your dispute letters:

Trans Union

PO Box 1000

Chester, PA 19022

Equifax

PO Box 740241

Atlanta, GA 30374

Experian

PO Box 2002

Allen, TX 75013

I subscribe to creditkeeper (http://www.creditkeeper.com).

For a modest monthly fee I can access my credit before my lenders do, so I know what they can expect to see.

I find it really helps when you tell them exactly what is your credit score, what are the recent inquiries they will find, and what accounts you've recently added.

Gives me a little more credibility with them.  It also doesn't hurt that I have a high score!

I don't know how many people know this, but you can also have your late payments on your credit report removed as well.
