Tennis ace Venus reaches sixth Wimbledon final
|
July 6, 2007
LONDON (AFP) - Venus Williams crushed Serbian sixth seed Ana Ivanovic 6-2, 6-4 on Friday to reach her sixth Wimbledon final where she will be aiming for a fourth title.
The 2000, 2001 and 2005 champion will take on either top seed Justine Henin or Marion Bartoli in Saturday's final where a win would make her the lowest ever seed to win the title.
Her appearance in the title match will also represent the seventh time in the last eight years that a Williams sister has been in the final at the All England Club.
"I felt like I played really well in the first set," said the 27-year-old who will be chasing her sixth career Grand Slam title.
"I didn't give her many chances but she stayed right in there and was a tough competitor. This will be my sixth final here and I'm really excited."
It was Williams's third successive straight sets demolition of higher-ranked opponents after knocking out 2004 winner Maria Sharapova in the fourth round and Svetlana Kuznetsova in the last eight.
But she had struggled in the early rounds.
She came back fron a set down to beat Russia's Alla Kudryavtseva in the first round and then needed Japan's Akiko Morigami to blow a chance to serve out their third round match.
"I wasn't thinking about the final at the beginning of the tournament. I was just thinking about the first round, which was pretty tough," said Williams who will be chasing her sixth career Grand Slam title on Saturday.
"It just seems like ages ago now, especially with all the rain With all the conditions this year, the rain and the wind, I feel like I had to play some of my best tennis to get through against some great players so it's very exciting.
"It's just about doing the right things at the right time, obviously believing in myself. I always believe in myself. I feel like no matter who I play, I have the advantage going up.
"I feel like I do so many things well, I actually have a great reputation behind me, too."
For Ivanovic, it was the second tournament in a row where she had buckled under pressure of the big occasion following her collapse at the hands of Henin in the French Open final last month.
The Serbian, one of the big hits of this Wimbledon with her sunny personality and vivacious looks, saved three match points in the ninth game of the second set.
But Williams wrapped up the tie when Ivanovic went wide with a backhand after 86 minutes on court.
The statistics of the match told a brutal tale of domination.
Williams, who raced into a 4-0 lead in the first set, carved out 16 break points in the match compared to the Serbian's four.
