The F.U.D is critical. Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt. For most people starting out they have no one close by who has real life experience with RE investing. FUD can stop you in your tracks. Worse is when family and friends who have no real experience offer 'advice'. Focus on advice from people who have been there, who have gone where you want to do, who have experience doing what you want to do.
Have a plan. Assume that any plan created when you are new to something will have gaps and holes in it. You can revise it later after you discover what needs changing. Each week do something that advances the plan. Progress will help destroy the FUD factor. Take specific actions. Actions that are stepping stones. Things like viewing properties even without any real expectation of buying. Just the act of looking increases your awareness of the market and what if feels like to hunt for deals.
While you are taking action take time to build your network of contacts. Play the field and get to know a lot of people. You can filter out the bozos later as you identify the people you can learn from.
Ready, Fire, Aim. Calibrate as you move forward and your aim will get better. Once on target you will start to find success. Remember you are looking for motivated sellers more than you are looking for real estate.

I would(and did) start with family and friends. If you're not trusted enough by them to borrow money for a deal, you'll probably have a hard time convincing a bank to loan you money either.
